Notes
Ugo Foscolo began publishing Ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis in Bologna in 1798. This incomplete first edition was finished by Angelo Sassoli and subsequently repudiated by Foscolo. The publisher Marsigli had removed jacobin and anti-clerical sections. In 1800, after Marengo, Marsigli brought out a new edition reinstating the radical content (with false imprint 1801). Foscolo revised the novel and produced an authoritative edition in Milan in 1802, which is the one most translations in this database are based on.
In 1816, a new approved edition appeared in Zurich (falsely dated London 1814), to which Foscolo added a polemical letter to Napoleon and his 'Notizia biograficai'. The novel was also published in London in the original Italian in 1811 by the bookseller Romualdo Zotti (unauthorised by Foscolo) and 1817 by John Murray (with Foscolo's supervision).
