Notes
This treatise, which included Paine's demand for universal suffrage, was originally written to circulate in Holland where 'The Rights of Man' was not generally known. It was subsequently used to influence the ongoing deliberations of the National Convention on the new Constitution and was dedicated to his colleagues in the Convention as proof of his continuing attachment to France. It was read before the Assembly on 7 July.
Originally published in French, it was translated into English in Paris (same printer), London and Philadelphia (Omrod & Conard).
