Notes
The translator L.C.D has been tentatively identified as "le citoyen Delandine". Before becoming a deputy to the National Assembly in 1789, Delandine had been editor of a periodical, 'Le Conservateur, ou Bibliothèque choisie de littérature, de morale, et d’histoire' (1787-88, Buisson), which published interesting extracts from French and foreign works. In the approbation on the back page, he signs himself D. His interest in women writers led him to edit collections by Mme de Tencin and Mme de La Fayette (1786, Cuchet).
The 4-volume translation was reviewed favourably in the 'Journal encyclopédique' (May 1793).
