Notes

Mirabeau's translation was suppressed by the police. His "imitation" of Romilly's letter is extended with his own observations on criminal law and punishment. Romilly claims in his memoirs that the latter were largely adapted from his 'Observations on a late publication, intituled, Thoughts on executive justice'.
