Notes
Author's name left off the frontispiece. Dedicated to the marquis de La Fayette.
The strongly Rousseauist language used throughout this 'translation' was probably greatly assisted by the poet Jean-François de Saint-Lambert, habitué of the comtesse d'Houdetot's salon, and her lover. It was preceded by letters of introduction addressed to the 'Mercure de France' by Pierre-Louis Lacretelle.
Crevecoeur's work was probably the most popular of all the French books on America apart from abbé Raynal's Histoire philosophique.
