Favourably reviewed in the Monthly Review, Vol.XXII (Jan-Apr 1797), pp.320-21: "While the enemies of the French republic are, in almost every part of Europe, incessantly execrating the authors and supporters of the Gallic revolution, and attacking their private characters as well as their public conduct, the author of the present performance stands forth in vindication of the now prevailing party, and particularly of those distinguished leaders who compose the present Executive Directory; whom in conformity with the unceremonious language of the day in France, he plainly denominates THE FIVE MEN: in open defiance of Rank and HIgh Station, with all their former attendant titles and trappings".
