Notes

Jordan was tried as the publisher of Paine's 'Rights of Man, Part the second' and sentenced to two years in the King's Bench Prison, from 1792-94 (Nat Arch TS11/726). Johnson then published Paine's work in an expensive edition, which was unlikely to be challenged in law.

Soon after his release, Jordan was declared bankrupt in November 1795. He was later sentenced to another six months, from 1798-99, this time with Joseph Johnson, for publishing Gilbert Wakefield's 'Reply' (TS11/456).
