Notes
This second edition of Bruner's translation of 'La Chaumière Indienne' is in facing French-Italian text. Bruner explains that this edition is corrected from the first, published in 'anno quarto' [1795]. St-Pierre's source text has anti-clerical elements, but is an essentially Rousseauist conte philosophique leveraging an idealised India to read back to Europe. Bruner's edition is dedicated to (Ferdinando) Maraschalchi, ambassador of the Kingdom of Italy in Paris. This copy includes an inscription in 1815 from Bruner to 'Mr Payne', a British bookseller with radical associations, encapsulating a three-country publication and translation axis from Rome to Paris to London.
