Noël Aubin was born in Tours to a master chandler. Following in his father's footsteps, he took up candle-making himself for a time; however, following his arrest in Tours in An 3 (1794-1795), he moved to Paris and began working as a translator and bookseller/publisher. Between 1795-1796, he collaborated with Jean-Marie Chevet. He was also friendly with the brilliant aphorist and writer, Chamfort and published 'Chamfortiana' (1800), one of the earliest biographical accounts of Chamfort and his sayings.

Between 1799 and 1802, he wrote and published several comedies under the pseudonyms 'Desfourgerais' and 'Desfourgets'. He also published (1793-1797) and translated (1795-1802) various works from English into French - most notably, by British authors such as James Harrington, William Cooke, and Oliver Goldsmith. After retiring as a bookseller, he returned to Tours, where he published several of his own plays between 1814 and 1829.
