An 'Avant-Propos' by the translator explains his reasons for presenting the translation of this successful "brochure" to the public, which has already gone through 13 English editions in eighteen months. He would have published it earlier if he'd not been so detained by his travels and business affairs.
A 'Preface' will offer a sceptical analysis of, "cette fameuse constitution, de cette prétendue liberté dont le riche… est le seul qui jouisse en Angleterre. Tout homme qui a le moyen d'acheter la justice, est sür de l'obtenir…" (p.viii).
In the Preface, he also offers a witty account of a translator's role. Such a book, he suggests, usually has an 'Avant-propos', a preface, an appendix, notes, and especially a dedictory note. While the preface is often the part that is read the least, it is the hardest for the translator to compose.
"On trouvera à la fin d'ouvrage un appendice qui n'est point dans l'Anglais: je l'ai cru absolument nécessaire à la plupart des lecteurs Français" (p.xi). This appendix offers a personalized glossary of all the people named in the book, describing many of the British radicals, such as Brand-Hollis, Jebb and Price, in a positive light.
