Custodi proposes an excerpt from Saint-Pierre's work published following the calling of the General Estate. In particular, the Italian patriot is interested in using the authority of Saint-Pierre to support the importance of creating a national guard to defend the revolutionary institutions. Custodi frequently stressed the importance of the military defense of the republican values. For example, he published the translation of the siege of Ancona where Italian troops fought bravely under French command. This theme had become particularly important after Marengo: if any Italian republic was ever to see the light of day it would happen only if a strong military army could defend this new political entity.
