Notes
After the convocation of the Estates-General and creation of the National Constituent Assembly in 1789, Bernardin de Saint Pierre expresses his thoughts on the future of the people, the clergy, the king, the nobility. As a preamble, he expresses doubt as to the decision-making process of the National Assembly, lacking a division of powers, and its ability, per se, to make the best decisions for the people. The author's prose is characterized throughout by a very personal tone of sincerity, and larded with many autobiographical touches.
Although elected to a revolutionary body, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre refused and belonged to no political grouping throughout the Revolution.
