In a work explicitly addressed to a European readership, Paine criticizes Raynal for his ahistorical view of the American Revolution in 'Révolution de l'Amérique' (1781). Whereas Raynal writes that no sacred rights existed in the US before the revolution, Paine stresses the despotism and violation of rights by the British Crown as causes of the revolution.
