Notes

In the preface "letter of a daughter to her beloved mother" there are several references to the risk that religion can weaken the republics (the Italian and the French). As long as Christianism is not suppressed, states the anonymous author of the preface, priests will remain enemies of the republic. Without mentioning it overtly, the author of the preface is clearly alarmed by the Concordat between the Catholic Church and Bonaparte signed in 1801.
