Notes

The translator's preface is a dialogue between a mother (symbolizing France) and a daughter (the Italian republic). The Italian republic warns her mother that to consider the Catholic religion as the dominant religion (as it happened in the 1801 Concordat) is to jeopardise the stability of the republic. Priests and religious authorities - continued the young republic - were natural allies of absolutist regimes, therefore, they were secretly menacing the French republic.
