Notes

The translators of this work proposed a wide plan of projected translations in the preface. This plan includes the Italian translation of the following works: L'examen important de Milord Bolingbroke (Voltaire) Le Militaire philosopher (Jacques-André Naigeon) The Natural history of superstition (John Trenchard) Le christianisme devoilé (d'Holbach) Recherches sur l'origine du despotisme oriental (Nicolas-Antoine Boulanger) De l'imposture sacerdotale (d'Holbach) A tale of a tub written for the universal improvement of Mankind (Jonathan Swift) Histoire critique de Jésus Christ (d'Holbach) L' évangile de la raison (Voltaire) Catéchisme de l'honnête homme (Voltaire) Le système de la nature (d'Holbach) Jusq'à quel point on doit tromper le peuple (Voltaire) Lettres de Memmius à Cicéron (Voltaire) Sermon des Cinquante (Voltaire) Homélie sur la superstition (Voltaire) Les questions de Zapata (Voltaire) Dieu et les hommes (Voltaire) L'epître aux Romains (Voltaire) Collection d'anciens évangiles (Voltaire) Questions sur les miracles (Voltaire) l'Empereur de la Chine et Frère Rigolet (Voltaire) Voyage au Ciel (Voltaire) The publisher of this translation planned to create an anthology with texts from the following authors: Edward Herbert, Lord Shaftesbury, Benoît de Maillet, Paul Rycaut, John Toland, Anthony Collins, Thomas Woolston, Matthew Tindal, Julien Offray de La Mettrie, Conyers Middleton, Diderot, d'Argens, Nicolas Freret, Charles-François Dupuis. This anthology never saw the light of day. The extensive footnotes added more material to fuel anti-clericalism in the Cisalpine Republic. The translator(s) pointed the finger against all mistakes of the Catholic Church and all the persecutions it was responsible for.
