Notes
Translator's preface is remarkably more positive about lettres de cachet than the editor's preface. It comments on the lettres' function in the legal system. The present monarch is a lover of justice who have been using lettres de cachet in a just and reasonable way. Confinement by lettre de cachet often has had a positive outcome on the behaviour of the victim. The English people naturally abhor lettres de cachet because their constitution does not allow them, but they should not impose their own legal standards and reasonings on other peoples. English liberty is compatible only with the English climate and soil; in France it would transform into terrible licentiousness. Englishmen should be glad to be the forerunners of rational thinking and liberty but must understand the particularities of other peoples' legal systems.
