Translator dedicates the text to his children in 'Epître dédicatoire du traducteur. A mes enfans': Thanks his son or daughter C. for help with translation.
In preface entitled 'Le traducteur', the translator discourses on the importance of books in a free society, both to circulate knowledge and to expose abuses. Explains that Goodwin has intended the book to denounce the horrible injustices of the English penal system. Translator suggests education is even more important than better laws to obtain reform. Followed by some thoughts on the genre of the novel. Also comments on the other translation of the same novel which appeared simultaneously. Comments that the other book is more expensive.
