Only vol. 1 is extant, which contains Sauli's introductory notes and Suzanne's narrative. Diderot's preface-annex and other materials that tell the story of Diderot's hoax at the expenses of the Marquis de Croismare, usually included in modern editions of the novel, are not present here. The integrity and make-believe of Suzanne's testimony is therefore left unscathed.

Sauli's translation adopts a simple, elegant language, including neologisms such as "uomo di mondo" and "sensibilità", and eschews the archaisms and stylistic conventions of much contemporary prose in Italian.
