Théophile-Étienne Gide was born in Geneva to engraver and clockmaker Étienne Gide. He was active in Paris from 1792; from 1792 to February 1797, he worked in partnership with his brother-in-law François Gay, sometimes under the name 'Librairie républicaine (à prix fixe)'. Between 1797 and about 1800, he worked in partnership with Laurent-Mathieu Guillaume.

He became a patented (licensed) librarian on 1st October 1812, with his patent renewed on 15th March 1817. He also worked as a music publisher from 1812 to 1822; his son, musician Casimir Gide (1804-1868) became a patented librarian on 4th February 1833 and took over the company.

Gide died in Paris on 7th January 1837.
