Notes
François Gay was the son of Jean Gay (b. 1750) and the brother-in-law of Théophile-Étienne Gide. Gay and Gide traded in partnership, sometimes under the name "Librairie républicaine (à prix fixe)'.
Gay sold some of his stock in February 1797, and the rest - together with his printing house in a church in Cluny (with four printing presses) and his lodgings on Rue d'Enfer - at the end of June 1797.
He was also a book broker.
He was still active in 1809.
