Notes

Parallel-text translation included in the Year 5 edition of Chénier's collected lyrics on pp. 64-69. This is the only instance in the volume where Chénier includes a translation of one of his poems.

The last six stanzas of the original poem, celebrating the struggle of Republican France against the coalition of tyrants, are left out (both in the French and in Fantoni's translation), as perhaps their bellicose tone was perceived as unsuitable under the new Directory regime.

We are grateful to Gauthier Ambrus for bringing this text to our attention.
