Notes
This edition appeared in April 1791, alongside another anonymous translation published by John Bew under the title, 'The Indian Cottage, translated from the French of Monsieur de St. Pierre, author of Études de la Nature, Paul et Virginie, &c.'. While the translation is widely attributed to a R.A. Kendall of whom little appears to be known, it is often misattributed to E.A. Kendall –see, eg, ONDB – whose translation was published in 1799 by Vernor and Hood, hence the confusion.
The anonymous translator provides a 4-page preface, which debates the practical merits of a hookah versus various, smaller pipes and shows some knowledge of Anglo-Indian culture. Footnotes are added throughout to explain unfamiliar terms.
