This declaration is part of an article written by Poggi to support the new Cisalpine constitution. Poggi was sure that the American declaration could be a strong and virtuous example for the young Cisalpine people to live free and independent. Poggi did not miss the opportunity to stress the similarities between the former British colonists and the people of the Cisalpine republic. Both languished under the power of a distant authority, the British Crown or the Austrian Emperor, and this distant power had laid unjust weight on both American and Italian peoples.
