Notes
The anonymous author of this catechism proposes many excerpts from Rousseau, Diderot and d'Holbach to answer the questions concerning the new political ideals and values. On the classification of the different forms of government, the author of the catechism adopts Diderot's Analyse de l'ésprit des lois and Roussea's Contrat social (pp.68-69). Similarly when he illustrates the role of popular assemblies the Italian author reports Rousseau's opinion taken from the Contrat social (pp. 76-77). Interestingly the Italian author also quotes, without mentioning his name but presenting him "an atheist whose life shown how honoured and estimated was by his fellow citizens", d'Holbach and its Système de la nature concerning the duties of a rightful citizen towards society (pp.87-89). Finally, the Italian catechism offers another Rousseau's passage taken from Discours sur l'économie politique on the importance of the love of homeland as a crucial value in a good citizen (pp.93-94).
