Notes
Edition reproduces Chénier's original preface.
The main difference between Ranza's translation and Raby (published in Turin in 1799) was that Ranza kept the verses instead of turning the source-text into prose. The 29 footnotes tackle Raby's translation and his debatable translation choices. The fact that two translations of the same work appeared in the same city within one year was explained in footnote n.2: "It was known that Ranza had compleated a translation of this tragedy in verses: therefore others wanted to beat him with whatever other translation. To satisfy the bookseller a prose translation was made so that it can be printed the soonest as possible. Our reader will examine our version in verses and compare it with Raby's. The reader will be the best judge of the two works" (p.5).
