Notes
The work is a bilingual book. Valeriani added a long introduction explaining the history of the La Rochefoucauld's work from its first edition until to the revolutionary period. Valeriani praised to his cisalpine fellows the clarity and concise character of La Rochefoucald's work. The former Venitian citizen considered his translation useful for his own times. In particular he highlighted how La Rochefoucauld could express his open criticism of despotism when there was no freedom of thought. Valeriani insisted on how much this work has been praised by Voltaire and Bayle who considered La Rochefoucauld a crucial author for the enlightenment movement. Valeriani presented the life of the author as marked by his constant plotting against the Crown. The Italian author respected this activism that reflected a certain degree of autonomy from the monarchical institution (p.XV-XVI).
