Notes

Dal Pino erroneously indicates the author of his source-text as the better known Linguet, who had also written in favour of divorce before the Revolution in his Légitimité du divorce, justifieé par les Saintes écritures, par les Pères, par les Conciles, etc. aux Stats Généraux (Brussels 1789). Elisa Strumia was the first to identify Hennet's pamphlet as the text Del Pino translated from, see Rivoluzionare il bel sesso a Napoli (Naples: Guida, 2011), p. 216.

The text is composed of two parts: the first is a translation of Hennet's proposal to the National Assembly; the second translates an older treaty supporting the legalisation of divorce by the radical enlightener Carlantonio Pilati. Dal Pino leaves out a section of the history of divorce that was in Hennet, as well as specific references to the context of 1789 France.
