Notes

The anonymous translator dedicated his work to the noble magistrate Francesco Pesaro from Venice. The long preface illustrates the European works concerning criminal laws. It shows how French, English, German and Italian literatures offered many new works in a crucial field such as the reform of the criminal laws. The translator explains that the main reason he decided to put Brissot's work in Italian was the formation of a Venitian commission to reform the criminal laws of the republic (pp.XXI-XXII).
