Notes

The epigraph is a quote taken from Lucretius' De rerum natura. In the preface Lauberg highlighted how Hélvetius played a crucial role in preparing the French revolution and the end of the tyranny of clergy and nobles. Lauberg promised to translate other works by the French authors if his translation was well-accepted. Lauberg frequently intervened in his translation adding footnotes where he expressed his point of view on Hélvetius' work. His convinced republicanism mixed with a professed anti-clericalism constantly emerged in the footnotes. Lauberg's interventions are always indicated as translator's note thus distinguishing them from the footnotes present in the source-text.
