Notes

This is a new translation of Rousseau's work. It differs from the Venetian edition for more accurate linguistic choices. The date of publication remains uncertain. However, the anonymous translator mentions in the preface the "recent" formation of a united Cisalpine Republic. Bologna and the Cispadane Republic merged into the Cisalpine Republic in the summer of 1797.
