Interestingly, in this French translation the epigraph appearing on the title page is different from the English originals published in Dublin and Paris. Both 1797 Dublin and 1832 Paris publications of this novel in English contain an epigraph from Horace's Epistles, while the present 1797 French translation does not display this epigraph from Horace, instead, we see the one from Virgil's Aeneid, book VI.

What is even more interesting is that in another French translation of this book that was also published in Paris in 1797 under a different title Le Moine the original epigraph from Horace is retained in full as it appears in the two Enlgish versions mentioned above.
