Notes
1755 edition published by J. Schreuder & Pierre Mortier le jeune, with corrections, a preface and notes by Jean Rousset de Missy ('L.C.R.D.M.A.D.P.').
Rousset de Missy was a French Huguenot writer from the Netherlands. He was a renowned historian, writer on international law and prolific journalist for the Mercure historique et politique after 1724. He studied at the Collège du Plessis in Paris, joined the Dutch States Army during the War of the Spanish Succession and was present at the Battle of Malplaquet (1709).
Much of his writing focused on the importance of international law and the impact of international treaties between states, frequently citing such Seventeenth-Century theorists as Hugo Grotius and Samuel Pufendorf. "La Politique, c'est l'art de gouverner l'Etat, & d'en diriger toutes les Affaires, soit dans la Paix, soit dans la Guerre, relativement à ses Interêts avec les autres Puissances, & conformément au Droit & à la Justice." He believed disputes between sovereign nations could be settled by established procedures. War could thus be avoided by taking the road of informal and alternative dispute settlement mechanisms.
