Notes

The translator omits More's jokey, prefatory materials that frame the fantastic nature of the text. These include a sample of the Utopian alphabet, a specimen of poetry and its translation, another poem by "the Poet Laureate, Mr Windbag", nephew of the narrator Raphael Hythlodaeus (Nonsenso), and More's letter to Peter Gilles, the publisher, and Gilles' letter to Busleiden, all contributing to the literary conceit of Raphael's discovery of this island where he stayed for five years.
