Citation from avertissement by translator. The novel tells the story of a pair of corrupt nobles who choose a family of innocent peasants for their terrible revenge. By stressing that these events took place in historical time (medieval France), Cantwell contributes to delegitimizing the Old Regime. He also stresses in the preface that the nobility aspired to rule as sovereigns in their respective domains, a form of federalism that the new one and indivisible French Republic could not tolerate .
