There appears to be almost no publicly available information about the translator, Reverend Joseph Trapp, A.M. (i.e. Master of Arts), apart from his dossier in the Royal Literary Fund Case Files held in the British Library [RLF Loan 96, Vol.1/11]. In his applications from 1792 to 1797, he describes himself as a German 'Divine', and lists a number of his works as a translator, compiler and author, along with an account of his misfortunes.These include:

'Alexis, or the Cottage in the Woods' (1791, Robinson, 4v), a translation of Francois Ducray-Duminil's 1789 morally didactic novel.

'The Perverted Countryman, or Dangers of the Town', an undated translation of an unnamed French work. This might be Restif de la Bretonne’s bestselling 'Le Paysan perverti, ou les dangers de la ville' (1776 & 1784) although no record exists of any English translations before 1967 although there were plenty of German ones.

'The Crimes of the Kings of France, from Clovis to Lewis XVI' (1791, J Ridgway), a translation of an anonymous work by Louis de la Vicomterie de Saint-Samson.

'Proceedings of the National Convention of the trial of Louis XVI' (1793, for the author and sold by Murray, Kearsley, Ridway, Downes, Deighton, McQueen and at the World office), an edited compilation of accounts of the King's trial taken from documents published in The World newspaper.

'The Prospect before us!!! or the State of France in the month of August 1794; in reply to Montgaillard’s State of France; to which are added Reflections on the Expedience and Necessity of an immediate Peace with the French Republic. By Horatius Publicola' (1794, D.I. Eaton), a political pamphlet accusing the comte de Montgaillard for being an impostor, and attacking émigrés for plotting against Europe.

'Travels before the Flood' (1796, Robinson, 2v), a translation from Arabic of an account of men & morals in an antediluvian world.
