Notes
Claude Jacob entered a partnership with Henri Rolland in Strasbourg in 1784 to set up the type foundry known as the Imprimerie de la Société typographique. He had trained under John Baskerville in Birmingham before moving to Kehl in the 1780s to work for the publishing operation of Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais where he met Rolland. After suffering bankruptcy in December 1789 their operation was bought up by François-Georges Levrault and his associates, including his son François-Laurent-Xavier. Jacob continued to work there until 1792, creating new fonts. Jacob was a member of the Jacobin Club and became a city councillor in August 1792.
