Notes

Jean Gratiot was the son of a Jean-Pierre Gratiot and was baptised on 16th March 1767 in Villasavary, Aude. He trained as a surgeon but later worked as a printer for Joseph-Jean Lagarde, Secretary-General of the Directoire.

He was active from February 1795. From 17th April 1796 until 13th May 1800, he printed (initially under the name 'Imprimerie du Journal des défenseurs de la patrie) J. Lavallée's Journal des défenseurs de la patrie; from Germinal, Republican year 4 (1796) until at least Frimaire, year 8 (1799-1800), he also printed the government newspaper Le Rédacteur.

By August 1799 he had authored two successive memoirs against printer André-François Hacquard: 'Hacquart reconnu pour un vil calomniateur' and 'Hacquart se reconnaissant lui-même pour un vil calomniateur'. By 29th May 1800 he had also written a 'Mémoire à consulter... pour les citoyens Gratiot et Périés, propriétaires en partie du Journal... des défenseurs de la patrie' against Lagarde. According to an inspector's report of the bookshop in December 1810, following his trial with Lagarde, he was imprisoned for 18 months and issued a fine of 50,000 francs. However, he was allowed to resume trading by the decree of 27th January 1811. On 1st April 1811 he became a patented (licensed) printer, with his patent renewed on 15th October 1816; and a patented bookseller on 1st October 1812, with a patent renewal on 15th March 1817.

In 1838 he became associated with Jean-Baptiste Gros, who became a patented printer in his succession on 14th September that year.

Gratiot died in Paris on 27th April 1841. He was survived by his son, Amédée-Louis-Marie Gratiot (1812-1880), a printer in Paris and a director of the Papeterie d'Essonnes.
