Notes
The model for baron d'Holbach's gatherings was not the famous Parisian salons but the lively coterie of young English students that d'Holback had known at Leiden, including John Wilkes, who gathered three times a week at Madame Van der Tasse's boarding house to drink coffee, smoke tobacco and chat about politics and life.
