Notes

We know very little about Captain J. Thomson apart from the fact that he served in the Royal Regiment of Artillery. Besides his other translation of Pauw, 'Philosophical Dissertations on the Egyptians & Chinese' (1795, Thomas Chapman), he also translated a military work from Italian, 'A treatise on gun-powder; a treatise on fire-arms; and a treatise on the service of artillery in time of war: translated from the Italian of Alessandro Vittorio Papacino D'Antoni, Major General in the Sardinian Army, and Chief Director of the Royal Military Academies of Artillery and Fortification at Turin' (1792, T. & J. Egerton). See 'Bibliotheca Britannia' (1824).
