A multi-linguist who knew six languages, Breton de la Martiniere learnt shorthand with Theodore-Pierre Bertin who Introduced it into France in 1792. Breton de la Martiniere went on to found and supervise the group of shorthand writers who transcribed the National Assembly debates from 1792 onwards, contributing in this role to the Moniteur Universel. He also transcribed many of the famous trials (such as that of the Babeuf conspiracy). During his lifetime he also worked for the Journal des Debats, Gazette de France, Journal de Paris and Gazette des tribunaux.
