Notes

This pedagogical work explained the 'Déclaration' one article at a time, comparing them with equivalent declarations in the various US state constitutions. It was published as part of Dufart's 'Collection de livres classiques, dédiée à la Convention Nationale, pour la nouvelle Instruction publique’ (Premiere Classe Logique et Rhétorique), which also included abbé Mably's 'Les Droits et des Devoirs du Citoyen', Condillac & Marsais on logic and Marsais on grammar.

The preface was dedicated ‘Aux amis de la Constitution’, and a long introduction helped to put the original Declaration into context, as well as providing an appendix with translations of the different American state constitutions.

There is some dispute over Paine’s authorship. See Carine Lounisi, ‘Thomas Paine, republicanism and the French Revolution’, in Annales Historique de la Révolution française (2016) and Gilbert Chinard, 'Notes on the American Origins of the "Déclaration Des Droits De l'Homme Et Du Citoyen"', in Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, Vol.98, no.6 (Dec 23, 1954), pp.383-396.
