Kenneth E. Carpenter notes that the style of the dedication page to the Marquis of Lansdowne differs from the main text suggesting the hiring of a hack translator whose work was supervised and edited by Vaughan. Vaughan sent 400 copies of this edition to Thomas Jefferson (and through Jefferson, to the Duc de la Rouchefoucauld-Liancourt) in Paris for free distribution to his friends and others.
