Notes
p. 31: in a footnote to a citation from Tacitus within Gordon's Discourse, Desmoulins reflects on the quality of the translation, stating that it 'n'est qu'une traduction littérale d'historiens'. In some cases, Desmoulins, claims, he will provide Tacitus' original Latin to prevent his words from being deliberately misconstrued by his enemies: 'afin d'ôter toute prétexte à la malignite d'empoisonner mes phrases, et de prétendre aussi que ma traduction d'un auteur mort, il y a quinze cent ans, est un crime de contre-révolution'. He then goes on to claim that Marat shared Tacitus' point of view, citing an intervention by the former in the National Convention.
The epigraph by Machiavelli at the beginning of Le Vieux Cordelier is also take from Gordon's Discourses.
