Notes
Originally published in the didactic, weekly journal, 'La Feuille villageoise', under the editorship of Joseph-Antoine Cerutti, this catechism was published as a separate pamphlet (1791, no publisher indicated), adding the Constitution and Declaration of the rights of man as appendices. This pamphlet was republished in 1794 and 1798 by veuve Fournier.
As epigraph, it carried a quote from Jean-Jacques Rousseau's 'Gouvernement de la Pologne' (1782): "Un enfant en ouvrant les yeux, doit voir la patrie, et jusqu'a la mort ne doit plus voir qu'elle".
A recommendation in the English translation's preface to address any comments to "Nyon junior, bookseller in Paris" (Nyon le jeune) suggests that he may be the publisher.
