Notes
While in London in 1784, Mirabeau frequented the circles of Genevan exiles and radical or reformist thinkers such as Benjamin Franklin, Richard Price, Benjamin Vaughan and Samuel Romilly. Franklin convinced him to translate the anonymous pamphlet against the order of Cincinnatus (attributed to Aedanus Burke). With the help of Sébastien Roch Nicholas Chamfort and Guy Jean Baptiste Target, Mirabeau largely expanded the original by including additional documents (often in translation) and his own comments. It was afterwards translated into English by Romilly. Foreword by Mirabeau containing interesting comments on his persona as author (finally publishing in his own name) and his ideas of translation (making a text relevant through adaptation). The first direct attack on the principle of nobility, according to William Doyle. Doyle, Aristocracy and Its Enemies, p. 121; Israel, The Expanding Blade, p. 78; Leech, Cosmopolitanism, p. 86-90.
