Notes
Eaton, who was fluent in French, spent several years as a student in the English College at Omer in France. It is likely that he translated most of the extracts that appeared in his various journals and publications.
See Daniel Lawrence McCue's entry in the ONDB (2007) for an excellent survey of his life and appraisal of his enduring legacy as an advocate for freedom of expression by his courageous commitment to publishing – despite relentless official harassment – all manner of liberal, progressive thought in politics and religion.
