The son of a lawyer, Poisson de La Chabeaussière was educated at the collège des Quatre Nations. Before the Revolution, he had served with the bodyguards of "Monsieur" (Louis XVI's brother, the comte de Provence) and been a librettist and playwright.

Described on the frontispiece of his Catechism as the former "Chef d'un des bureaux de la troisième division du Ministère de l'Intérieur", where he was in charge of "public instruction" before he and his wife were imprisoned for eight months in 1794, following an accusation by his step-daughter. After his release, he regained his position with the Committee of Public Instruction, becoming chef du deuxième bureau, responsible for pedagogy in schools and museums. He also contributed to the Décade Philosophique from 1795–1807.
