Notes

Legal reformer and politician from a Huguenot background of jewellers and watchmakers. Called to the bar in June 1783. Made several tours of the continent, staying with his brother-in-law John Roget in Geneva, where he met Pierre Etienne Louis Dumont who would become a close friend. Roget had been the pastor of the French Protestant Chapel in Soho. He was invited to join the Bowood Circle after the Earl of Shelburne read his 'Fragment on the Constitutional Power and Duty of Juries upon Trials for Libels' (1784), which was published anonymously by the S.C.I.
