Notes

Translation of the section on toleration from Part 1 of Rights of Man (translated segment begins "Toleration is not the opposite of information, but is the counterfeit of it" and ends "these same persons, under the figure of an established church, will not permit their maker to receive the varied tithes of man's devotion"). Rasori published the translation as part of his lead article entitled 'Religious Tolerance and Intolerance' in the issue of 18 October 1796 (n. 43, pp. 333-35). He omitted Paine's responses to Burke's arguments and adapted references to specific English institutions and figures.
